Visiting Cong or Ashford Castle?

Cong is a beautiful village located on the borders of County Mayo and County Galway in the west of Ireland.

Besides a visit to our bookshop (located conveniently in the centre of the Main Street) there are many things to do and places to visit around the village. From cycling to horse riding, falconry to fishing there are lots of activities for all the family to enjoy. And if you just prefer to relax and take life easy the village offers many fine eating places.

Cong is home to Cong Abbey and the twelfth century ruins of the Abbey and its grounds may be explored. The cloisters and yew shaded grounds are the perfect place to while away a summers afternoon reading a book, and if you are lucky you may see the red squirrels or pine martens.

Across the river from the abbey you can access the forest which is home to caves, castles and a fairy tale tower built by the Guinness Family in the 19th century. There are many miles of trails to walk or cycle. If you enjoy history there is also the Heritage Trail around the village.

Around ten minutes walk from the village is Ashford Castle and Lough Corrib. There is a charge to access the Castle grounds and the Castle itself is a private hotel. Trips out on the lake may also be taken from Ashford Pier or Lisloughrey Pier whch lies to the east of the village. More information about sailings can be found at the Corrib Cruises website –

Of course the village of Cong is also famous as the location for the filming of the Quiet Man and the Quiet Man Museum on the corner of Abbey Street offers tours of the film locations.

If you are planning a trip to Ireland then Cong is the perfect destination. If you are staying at Ashford Castle then come down to the village and see the best that Ireland has to offer.
